Not too long ago, I hosted a webinar on how to set up a blog. Seconds after it was finished, everyone wanted to know: how do we develop blog ideas?
Before we get into how to develop blog ideas, it’s essential to make sure you have a solid content marketing strategy in place.
The purpose of a blog is to provide your target audience with content they find interesting, helpful, and educational. It is a critical component of your digital marketing strategy and serves several purposes:
- To establish your authority in your industry.
- To draw organic traffic to your Website— if you regularly publish keyword-optimized content related to your industry, it is more likely your content will appear in search engines.
- To serve as a lead magnet—valuable SEO-optimized content will bring visitors to your site via search engines, blog subscriptions, and social media shares. If what you publish is valuable to your audience, they will more likely subscribe to your blog.
So when you’re marketing yourself or your business online with content, the view, “I’ve got to convince people how great my brand is or how wonderful my products are,” will get you nowhere.
You’ve got to change your thinking: “I want to provide useful information to help people find what they need or want.”
Now that you have the right frame of mind, it’s time to develop content ideas.
Here are 9 ways to brainstorm blog ideas
1. Be the Client
Ask yourself what you would want to know if you needed or were looking for a product or service in your industry. Write down everything that comes to mind, and then edit the list to reflect viable blog ideas.
2. Ask your current customers
Ask your current customer base or clients what information they sought when researching your products or services. Send an email with the question, or create a free survey with Survey Monkey.
3. Solve Problems
What problems does your service or product solve? Put the answers into blog post format.
4. Research Trendsetters
Research trending topics in your industry with Google Trends or by using hashtag searches on your social media platforms. Reddit is a great platform to find interesting and popular topics. Don’t copy the content, but come up with new angles to write about popular topics.
5. Break it Down
Review all aspects of your products or services, and write about unique facets or details. For example, if you sell security products, perhaps there are stories you could tell about how a potential theft or threat was avoided with one of your products. These could be customer-based anecdotes.
6. Research Competitors
Find your competitors on social media or by doing a Google search. Pick out the ones who generate great traffic and engagement with their blog posts. Brainstorm unique angles or blog ideas centered on similar topics.
7. Plan Your Keywords
Use Google’s Keyword Planner or SERanking, to analyze keywords related to your industry. Download the spreadsheet of suggested keywords related to your input, and develop blog ideas based on the higher-ranking keywords.
8. Analyze Past Posts
Analyze past blog posts with Google Analytics to see which type of content drove more traffic. Come up with blog post ideas related to the same topic, but offer something new.
9. Gain Insight
Use your social media platform’s insights analytics tools to see which blog posts you shared engaged plenty of comments, likes, and shares. Repeat your successes.
