WordPress site owners who use the wonderful plugin nRelate, which recommends more content to readers as they scroll down your posts, will have to find another plugin by the end of this year to replace it.
nRelate announced this week the discontinuation of the service. Why?
Here’s their answer:
Simply put, nRelate, the entity that provides recommendations to sites across the web, will no longer be a stand-alone business. Instead, our parent company has proactively opted to internalize our assets for competitive advantage, with the belief this strategy ultimately represents a bigger opportunity than our current path – a difficult decision, but one that makes a lot of sense, and one we both agree with.”
Basically they are pursuing a higher money-making model instead of providing the free product that allowed users to implement advertising via sponsored content along with other internal recommended content. Users received a portion of the revenue from ads served with nRelate.
There are other option out there such as the highly popular Outbrain, and LinkWithin. This article by Hongkiat gives a good breakdown on both, as well as recommendations for other WordPress plugins. Warning, the site bombards you with ads. Techgyd offers a breakdown on Outbrain and Taboola.
Goodbye nRelate!
