The use of social media networking sites by adults has shot up to 65% according to the Pew Research Center, which has been tracking social media since 2005.
While the use of the technology has leveled off since 2013 overall, the use by older Americans has gone up 7% in the past 10 years. The use by young adults, aged 18-29, has increased as well, from 12% in 2005 to 90%. (see data chart below).
Still, usage among those 65 and older has more than tripled since 2010 when 11% used social media.
The report by the Pew Research Center also finds that social media use is greater among those in higher income and education brackets.
